Matthew Milburn

Head Teacher
Matthew Milburn

I began my career as a Drama teacher at Breeze Hill School in Oldham in 1988 and in 1992 I was appointed as the Co-ordinator for Creative and Media Arts at Oldham Sixth Form College. I went on to become Assistant Principal at the College which has had a transformational impact on the life chances of many students in the town.

I worked as Deputy Headteacher at an 11-18 comprehensive, Brigshaw School, Leeds from 1997. I was instrumental in establishing a collaborative sixth form provision and helped to manage the rebuilding of the school following a major fire in 2000.

My first headship came in 2003 at Kingstone School close to the centre of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. Kingstone was an 11-16 school with 1500 pupils on roll. The school gained Performing Arts Status and we developed a drama based Key Stage 3 curriculum entitled 'Cultural Studies.' It became one of a handful of secondary schools to be named as a School of Creativity in 2007. Results improved, as did the outcomes from inspection reports (going from 'Satisfactory' to 'Good' twice) and we developed a holistic assessment model that encouraged children and their families to analyse progress and identify where further improvement could be made.

In September 2011 I took up my second headship, at Saddleworth School in Oldham. Attainment at the school is high and many of the children are highly aspirational. As well as being Headteacher I am currently Deputy Chair of Oldham Secondary Heads group and have been a keen advocate of the Peer Review process which is being rolled out across all secondary schools in the Borough.
